Easy Ways to Cut Energy Bills

electric bills

If you are looking for ways to save money this year, you may be considering a few ways to cut down on the amount you spend. One of the best ways to cut down your yearly expenses is by reducing your energy bills.

But how can you minimise energy usage to help cut costs of energy bills? We’ve created a list of several easy ways to cut energy bills.

Switch Energy Provider

First off, have you shopped around to ensure you are using the best, most cost-effective energy provider in your area?

You can save money simply by searching on price comparison websites to see if there are more cost effective options available when it comes to your energy provider.

When it comes to maximising your savings, you should look into finding the cheapest companies for both electricity and gas. Choosing the same provider for both may be convenient, but you will likely pay the price for that.

Change Light Bulbs

Over the last few years, there has been much advancement in energy saving light bulb technology. If you are using old bulbs that you may have purchase a few years ago, you may not be using the most efficient energy saving bulbs available.

An energy efficient LED light bulb can cost as little as £1.75 per year to run and use around 90% less energy than traditional light bulbs.

Not only this, but new energy saving bulbs last even longer than the traditional ones, too.

But don’t forget, as great as energy saving light bulbs are, nothing beats the good old fashioned turn-the-lights-off method to save money on energy bills.

Reduce draught

Especially in the colder months, a draught can be detrimental to your energy bills. A draught will let the heat escape from your home, which in turn will increase the amount of time the heating is on in your home.

Here are a few areas to think about when reducing the draught:

  • Windows – invest in draught proofing strips to put around the frame.
  • Doors – for old style doors, use draught proofing strips on any gaps. You can even just use something as simple as a towel to cover the gap at the bottom.
  • Fireplace – simply use the fireplace or use an inflatable pillow to wedge up the chimney. *Make sure you remember it’s up there and is easy to take out as and when you want to use the fireplace!

Turn down your heating

By reducing your thermostat by as little as 1%, you can make significant savings across the course of a year.

If you are starting to get chilly, instead of turning up the heating, wear extra clothes or cosy up under a blanket when you are on the sofa.

You can even invest in a smart thermostat which you can control when you are not in your home to ensure that you never leave the heating on whilst nobody is in the home.

Improve Insulation

Loft insulation is easy to buy from your local hardware store and is relatively simple to install. Although, we would only recommend you do it yourself if you are confident and the loft space is safe to operate in.

Even if you don’t make it look too pretty, you can safe thereabouts of £100+ purely by insulating your loft space to ensure that heat is not escaping from your home.
